Free & Low Cost Computer Training
Jackson Community College is now offering free and low cost computer training lessons to the community! Through the Department of Commerce Grant Funds, we are able to offer a range of classes free to the public, from learning operational functions to constructing resumes and being able to Skype with your relatives! If you are looking to improve your computer skills, professional image, or general literacy on computers, this program will have a course for you! Listed below are some of our courses, located on the Jackson Community College campus, as well as other community settings. Being an outreach program, we are teaming up with many area businesses to make this a success throughout the community. Weekly sessions will be held at Jackson Community College (Jackson-Main Campus, Jackson-Downtown Campus, Hillsdale-LeTarte Center), as well as the Adrian Public Library, Adrian Senior Center, Jackson Crouch Senior Center, and the Salvation Army of Jackson. Other training locations and promotional partnerships include the Adrian Chamber of Commerce, Community Action Agency, Country Club of Jackson, Dahlem Center, Ella Sharp Museum, Gerdau-MacSteel, Hanover Library, Hanover-Horton High School, Hillsdale Community Library, Jackson Coffee Company, Jackson College Access Center, Jackson District Library, Jackson Housing Commission, JTV, Kelly Services, Mortgage 1 of Jackson, New Jerusalem Christian Fellowship, Raymond James Financial Advisors, South Central Michigan Works, and the Village of Spring Meadows community.
Free Computer Courses
Introduction to Computers Series
If you have never touched a computer before or are terrified to become one with technology… this is the class for you! In this series, we will evaluate the different functions of a computer, appropriate posture, basic MS Applications, web browsing, e-mail, and basic Internet security. This is the base level offering which will transition learners to application based courses, such as Microsoft Office, an Introduction to Social Media, and many more!
Basic Keyboarding
Essential for all beginning level computer users, but open to all. This class will meet weekly and train learners on precision, speed, and consistency when typing. It will take multiple weeks to complete and a certification will be awarded upon successful completion of the course. If you “hunt-and-peck” when you type, this will train you to use the home row typing format to greatly increase your speed and effectiveness.
Getting Connected with #SocialNetworking
You just poked me! I just #tweeted! Let’s Skype!... What does this mean?! In this fun 21st century friendly course, we are going to dive into social networking! This will allow you to connect with your family and friends on the Internet, strengthen some relationships, and stay up to date with everything that is going on in the world around you. The different sites we will cover include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, and more! For additional training in each media site, ask about more advanced classes!
Prerequisites: This class requires beginner computer skills, knowledge of basic computer applications and experience with the Internet.
Introduction to Microsoft Office 2010
If you are looking for a job or refining your skills in document production, this entry level course will cover all the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to improve your understanding and efficiency when using these applications. In addition to the primary Office programs, we will also take a look into the world of cloud computing, wrapping up the series with an introduction to Dropbox and Google Documents. For additional training in each program, ask about more advanced classes!
Prerequisites: This class requires beginner computer skills, knowledge of basic computer applications and experience with the Internet.
Introduction to the Apple iPad
In the 21st century, it is crucial to stay up-to-date with devices and tools that could save you a lot of time and stress when getting work done. In this class, those looking to understand more about the Apple iPad Tablet should definitely sign up for this fun, fast-paced class. We will discuss the primary use for an iPad compared to traditional computers, specifications to look at when purchasing one, and many productivity applications.
Additional Classes
The IT Literacy Outreach program is constantly developing new courses to meet the needs of the community and stay current with constantly changing technologies. Some of our additional courses that are currently offered include online shopping, research databases, and cloud computing. These courses are for those individuals who have used the computer before, but have difficulty understanding the basic concepts and methods of utilizing these programs or operations. Traditionally, the students who start in Introduction to Computers work their way up to discover these software and internet gems.
