Sonographers are medical professional who operate ultrasonic imaging devices to produce diagnostic images and scans, videos, or 3D volumes of anatomy and diagnostic data. Sonography requires specialized education and skills to view, analyze and modify the scan to optimize the information in the image. Because of the high levels of decisional latitude and diagnostic responsibility sonographers have a high level of responsibility in the diagnostic process, certification in sonography is generally required. Sonographers require a high level of understanding in ultrasound physics, cross sectional anatomy, physiology, pathology and communication skills; as well as highly developed psycho-motor skills that are specific to the profession.

Employment of general ultrasound technicians is usually through a privately run practice or a hospital. Hospitals are expanding departments all over, and nationwide this is a growing field.

Easy steps to enroll at JCC
- Apply for admission. Complete an application online at www.jccmi.edu, or call any JCC location to obtain an application form.
- Apply for financial aid & scholarships. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, or obtain an application form from any JCC location and mail it in. Information on scholarships and loans is available from the JCC Financial Aid Office and the Jackson Community College Foundation.
- Request transcripts. If you have graduated from high school in the last two years, or if you are applying for nursing/allied health programs, have a high school transcript sent to JCC. Submit official college transcripts only if you are seeking a JCC certificate or degree.
- Complete course placement. Course placement assesses your skill level in writing, reading and math to ensure your success. Check with Student Services to see if it is required for you as ACT/SAT scores or previous college course work may fulfill this admission requirement.
- Meet with an advisor. The purpose of academic advising is to develop connections between students, faculty members and staff to discuss your goals, get your questions answered, plan your schedule. The Student Center in Bert Walker offers drop-in advising during regular hours or by appointment. Faculty advisors are best qualified to discuss career opportunities in their disciplines.
