Instructional Skills Workshop planned

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., June 14-17, JCC

Jackson Community College will host an Instructional Skills Workshop for current teachers and teacher education students utilizing a highly successful teaching model to enhance skills.  This four-day seminar course will be held June 14-17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on JCC's main campus.  It may be taken for two graduate credits from Spring Arbor University or two undergraduate credits from JCC, and may be applied toward recertification.

This practical workshop focuses on the delivery of each individual's lessons and provides participants an opportunity to receive specific feedback in a safe, constructive environment.  Each participant will be expected to teach three sample lessons and will receive feedback on multiple levels, including a written summary, a verbal overview and a video of their sample.  In addition to getting feedback participants will be expected and taught how to give positive, non-judgmental feedback.  The use of multiple intelligences and cooperative learning as foundational elements will be stressed in all teaching models.  This workshop has proven effective for beginning and experienced teachers alike.

Teaching the workshop will be Mary Belknap, teacher education coordinator at JCC and a 1996 Christa McAuliffe Teaching Fellowship winner.  Joining her will be Jim Scott, Ph.D., ISW facilitator trainer,  JCC  professor  and past multiple recipient of Who's Who Among America's Teachers honors.

Students should come with an openness to share and a commitment to be present at 100 percent of the workshop.  To register for the class call Mary Ann Rainey at (517) 787-0800, or for more information contact Mary Belknap, (517) 796-8575, or Jim Scott, (517) 796-8488.
