December 5th, 2006 For immediate release JCC dance students to hold benefit concert for Jennifer Murphy ScholarshipJackson Community College will host a benefit dance concert of current dance students at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10 in the Baughman Theatre, Potter Center. JCC’s jazz techniques dance class was rocked earlier this semester when one of their students, Jennifer L. Murphy, a freshman from Addison, was killed in a car accident. Students in the class decided that the demonstration concert would be a benefit toward the scholarship fund set up in Jennifer’s name. Jennifer and a friend had choreographed a dance number to be part of a collage piece, and now he will dance that number with a follow spotlight where Jennifer would have been. The production features 16 dancers of all different levels, some with years of experience, some with none, which requires all of the dancers to work collaboratively together, said Professor Martha Petry, dance instructor. They will perform five group pieces and then an assortment of compositions by various members. Chelsea Currie is a student in the class: “The class is just ‘right.’ I think of how I am pushed to new limits, that I am growing as a student and a dancer.” “I wish I had started taking dance sooner. I am thinking about all the fun I have learning new ways to express myself,” said student Travis Riggs. Join all the dance students for this special afternoon. Admission is free and a $5 donation to the scholarship fund is suggested. |
