32nds Annual Winter Film Series features variety of diverse picks

The Winter Film Series is held annually at the Michigan Theatre as part of JCC’s English 210 Introduction to Film class, and the community is welcome as well. Films begin at 7:15 p.m. on Mondays, and the cost is $6 per person.

  • Jan. 7 – The General (1927) Silent comedy with Buster Keaton, a train engineer in the Civil War.
  • Jan. 14 – No film
  • Jan. 21 – Michael Clayton (2007) An attorney (George Clooney) known as the “fixer” in his law firm comes across the biggest case of his career that could produce disastrous results for those involved.
  • Jan. 28 – Panic Room (2002) Three men search for a missing fortune in a big New York home while mother (Jodie Foster) and daughter hide in which they think is a secure room.
  • Feb. 4 – Punch Drunk Love (2002) Adam Sandler plays Barry Egan, a shy man with repressed anger issues who falls in love with Lena Leonard (Emily Watson), a co-worker of one of Barry’s seven sisters.
  • Feb. 11 – A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando star in the Tennessee Williams classic story of the disturbed Blanche DuBois who moves in with her sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Stanley Kowalski.
  • Feb. 18 – Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Steven Spielberg’s tale of a line worker (Richard Dreyfuss) who, after an encounter with UFOs, feels drawn to an isolated wilderness area along with others where something spectacular is about to happen.
  • Feb. 25 The Darjeeling Limited (2007) Three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other -- to become brothers again like they used to be.
  • March 3  – Spring break, no film. 
  • March 10 Strictly Ballroom (1992) Tale of champion caliber ballroom dancer and novice partner who step out in their own style.
  • March 17 – His Girl Friday (1940) Cinema stars Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell pair up in this story of a newspaper editor who uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying.
  • March 24 – Into The Wild (2007) Story of a 22-year-old college graduate who walked out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure. Written and directed by Sean Penn.
  • March 31 – Bottle Rocket (1996) A trio of friends in Texas plot a series of heists and fail miserably.
  • April 14 – Ghostbusters (1984) Three fired university researchers set up shop as paranormal exterminators in a unique ghost removal service.
  • April 21 – Superbad (2007) Story of three socially inept teenage boys who agree to provide alcohol for a party.
  • April 28 –  To be announced.
  • May 5 – No Film
