Phelan will join representatives from community colleges statewide as they visit with lawmakers at the Capitol to celebrate the state’s 28 two-year institutions. Community College Day in Michigan is focused on providing an opportunity for state leaders to honor the 28 community colleges in Michigan. Since 1914, community colleges have striven to provide affordable and convenient higher education opportunities to Michigan residents – serving both traditional and nontraditional students. Today’s community colleges play an integral role in the preparation and development of the state’s workforce. This day brings the focus of legislators and the executive branch to the special role community colleges fulfill in our state. Michigan’s community colleges are essential in helping to assist the unemployed, retrain workers, fill high-demand occupations, increase the state’s number of college graduates, and help to restore Michigan to economic vitality. “Community colleges serve a vital need in our communities,” Phelan said. “In Jackson and across the state, we are the first step to higher education for many. We provide career education in high-demand fields that is essential to providing needed workers for our economy, and we provide a great start toward a bachelor’s degree. Community colleges are affordable and accessible so all can see their dream of a college education become a reality.” |
