LaZebnik family establishes scholarship to honor parents; weekend of workshops planned
The family of Sam and Edith LaZebnik is remembering their parents with a newly established scholarship fund with the Jackson Community College Foundation. To kick off this new scholarship program, Jackson Community College will present three days of arts workshops in September in the Ruth Day Theatre, Potter Center.
The Sam and Edith LaZebnik Endowed Scholarship for the Arts will support students pursuing the arts, many of whom are busy with time in rehearsals, studios, and in practice for their particular arts, which can leave little time for students to work outside of class.
Seminars for writing and composing for television, film and literature will be held Sept. 25, 26 and 27, and will culminate with performances of a play, “Rachel Calof,” all to the benefit the LaZebnik scholarship fund. Sam and Edith LaZebnik emigrated from Russia to the U.S. as teen-agers, met and married in Detroit, and moved to Jackson in 1922. Starting with nothing but dreams, they worked and made it possible for their six children to each have an education. All attended JCC.
“Rachel Calof” tells the story of an 18-year-old mail-order bride who leaves her tough life in 1894 Russia to face even more challenges on the North Dakota frontier. This 80-minute play details the extraordinary life of a Jewish pioneer woman living with her husband and family in a 12-by-14-foot plank house. It will be presented at 8 p.m. Sept. 26 and 2 and 8 p.m. Sept. 27. Tickets are $15, with special pricing for students. For more information, contact the Potter Center Box Office at 517.796.8600.
The public is invited to participate by attending several of the events and by making a tax deductible contribution in any amount: $10, $20, $50, or more. All money collected will go to the JCC Foundation for scholarships for talented students in the arts. All events take place in the JCC Potter Center.
