Community Day welcomes public to campus
Bring the family out for a day of fun when Jackson Community College hosts a Fall Community Day, from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 on the Jackson campus.
Community members from Jackson County and the South Central Michigan area are invited to campus for a variety of activities, food and fun, including:
- Environmentally efficient/friendly cars on display
- Children’s play area and Kirby the Kangaroo sponsored by CP Federal Credit Union
- Meet members from the Jackson City Police; SWAT team equipment on display
- Campus tours, including backstage of the Potter Center and Campus
- View student housing
- Hear speaker Gary Siegrist, Dahlem Center, discuss sustainability and the environment
- YMCA’s Walk “America-On-The-Move-Week” at 1:30 p.m. This will be the finale of a week focusing on walking in which the Y is getting together teams to take a “virtual walk” from Jackson to the Mackinac Bridge, to encourage people to take 10,000 steps a day. Y officials will measure off a 1-kilometer walk area and encourage visitors to walk to help see how much better they can feel when they increase their activity level.
- Legacy Scholarship information booth; learn about the opportunities for Jackson County students to receive the Legacy Scholarship, good for local higher education institutions, including JCC, Spring Arbor University and Baker College.
- Information on JCC college programs
- Demonstrations in science, dance and other disciplines
- Plein Air Art Exhibit & Meet the Artists at the Potter Center’s second Floor Art Gallery
- Acknowledgement of 1940s Jackson Junior College graduate, Zenneth Arthur Pond (area’s first to down a Zero)
- American Cancer Society booth (JCC’s team)
- Live remote by radio K105.3 Jackson
- LaZebnik Scholarship Benefit — theatre production at 2 & 8 p.m. in the Ruth Day Theatre of Potter Center. “Rachel Calof” tells the story of an 18-year-old mail-order bride who leaves her tough life in 1894 Russia to face even more challenges on the North Dakota frontier. This 80-minute play details the extraordinary life of a Jewish pioneer woman living with her husband and family in a 12-by-14-foot plank house. Tickets are $15, with special pricing for students.
