JCC students to present drama, 'Book of Days'
Shedding perhaps unwanted light into some dark corners of a fictional small Missouri town, “Book of Days” by Lanford Wilson is an interesting and engrossing production. Jackson Community College theatre students will present the drama during two weekends in February, at 8 p.m. Feb. 19, 20 and 21, 27, 28, and 3 p.m. matinees Feb. 22 and March 1 in the Ruth Day Theatre, Potter Center.
“Book of Days” is set in the small town of Dublin, Missouri, which is dominated by a cheese plant, a fundamentalist church and a community theater. When the owner of the cheese plant dies mysteriously in a hunting accident, Ruth, his bookkeeper, suspects murder. Cast as Joan of Arc in a local production of George Bernard Shaw’s “Saint Joan,” Ruth takes on the attributes of her fictional character and launches into a one-woman campaign to see justice done. In “Book of Days,” playwright Wilson uses note-perfect language to create characters who are remarkable both for their comic turns and for their enormous depth. This tornado of a play propels you through its events like a page-turning mystery.
“Book of Days” was originally commissioned and produced at the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea. Tickets will be $8 for students and seniors and $10 for adults; Feb. 19 will be a special student preview with all tickets $5.
