Science Cafés feature topical conversations in a casual atmosphere
A Scientist Walks Into a Bar… Really! Come hear the punch line at Jackson’s first Science Café series. Scientists from Michigan universities talk about current science topics in a relaxed casual atmosphere, over drinks and food with friends.
The Science Cafés will be held on Thursday nights at Hudson’s Grill, 2900 Springport Road, in Jackson. Drink and food specials are offered each night. Students from Jackson Community College will collaborate as hosts, greeters and small group conversation starters.
Upcoming discussions include:
Thursday, April 23 at 6 p.m. Stem Cells and Beer Steins: a conversation on stem cell research with John Fink, M.D., professor of neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School.
Thursday, April 30 at 6 p.m. Lager and Low-Emission-Vehicles: a discussion and demonstration of fuel cell technology with Georg Raithel, Ph.D., professor of physics at the University of Michigan.
This is a nationwide initiative to bring scientific topics to the lay public to increase literacy and engage people in discussing science in a casual, informal atmosphere. JCC professors Mary Belknap and Laura Thurlow have worked with Meg Gower, a landscape architect and owner of Gower Design Group, who is also a part-time naturalist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Gower teaches natural science, forest ecology and hands-on astronomy at Waterloo State Park. With a letter of support from Thurlow, Gower received a grant from WGBH in Boston, makers of the PBS series NOVA, to host these workshops here in Jackson. She hopes these discussions will help the public be more informed about today’s scientific discoveries.
