LGBT celebration planned

Jackson Community College will host a Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Celebration from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, June 15 in the Potter Center Cafeteria.

Speakers from the University of Michigan Spectrum Center will present a panel discussion on their coming out stories. The Spectrum Center provides education, information and advocacy services to create an open, safe and inclusive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered students, faculty and the community at large.

“June is traditionally the month for gay pride/awareness celebrations since the Stonewall Riots took place in June (1969) at the Stonewall Bar in New York City,” said Tom McMillen-Oakley, JCC professor of art. “LGBT folks want to be able to fully participate in the human experience. I think having this panel come to JCC will be an eye-opening experience for those that maybe don’t know what to expect from the LGBT community.”

This is a free event and the community is invited. Light refreshments will be served.
