Spring/Summer enrollment increases at JCC

Jackson Community College’s enrollment for the Spring/Summer semester is at its highest mark over the past five years in both headcount and billing contact hours (a measure of the actual time spent in class).

According to statistics taken on the 10th day of Spring/Summer semester, JCC has 3,486 students enrolled, up 13 percent, from 3,073 a year ago, and up 17 percent from five years ago (2,971). Those students are enrolled in 24,030.50 billing contact hours, up nearly 20 percent from last year’s total of 20,089 billing contact hours and almost 40 percent from five years ago, when the number was 17,175.50. These figures bring JCC’s year-to-date total for billing contact hours to 160,312.06, surpassing the set target of 148,000 hours.

Billing contact hours are up at all JCC locations. The Jackson and Lenawee campuses each have had increases over 20 percent, while Hillsdale has seen a 41 percent over last Spring/Summer. Jackson accounts for 43 percent of billing contact hours, while the Internet (distance learning) represents 27 percent, Lenawee 21 percent and Hillsdale 9 percent.

A breakdown of student demographics shows a 32 percent increase in the number of students enrolled full-time in the semester compared to last Spring/Summer, and which has doubled over the last five years. The number of students enrolled for the semester under the age of 22 continues to grow, an 8 percent increase from last year’s Spring/Summer semester. And, the number of students of color is up 5 percent over last Spring/Summer, and up 16 percent from five years ago.

“JCC has continued to work toward providing excellence in our educational offerings, our facilities and extracurricular activities,” said Cindy Allen, executive director of community relations and the performing arts. “I believe that students and the community are recognizing our effort and the valuable educational resource they have here in Jackson, as well as Lenawee and Hillsdale counties.”
