John Willis to take over as interim coach of JCC men's basketball
Jackson Community College is pleased to announce that John Willis, assistant coach for men’s basketball since 2006, will take over as interim head coach for the Jets men’s basketball team for the 2010-2011 season.
Willis takes over after former coach Steve Finamore announced this week that he was leaving to accept a position as basketball coach with East Lansing Public Schools. Willis has served as assistant coach with Finamore since 2006.
“We’re looking to hit the ground running,” Willis said. “I want to get into some conditioning as soon as possible so we have a very physical, defensive basketball team.”
JCC Athletic Director Steve Bloomfield said Willis is the perfect person for this challenge, filling the opening just a month before the school year starts.
“John has helped put this year’s recruiting class together. He understands the college’s philosophy, is a great role model and has a vision for where we want our basketball team to go,” Bloomfield said. “He is a perfect fit to get the job done. We’re excited that he was willing to accept this opportunity.”
John Willis is well-known in the Jackson community, having served as director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for 15 years. Willis has coached Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball for the center and served as head basketball coach at Tomlinson Alternative School for three years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix in business administration, and also attended JCC and the Detroit Technical Institute.
Willis lives in Jackson with his wife, Mary, and their 10 children, seven boys and three girls.
