JCC announces 2011 King Medal of Service Award recipients

Jackson Community College is pleased to announce the two honorees who will receive the 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Medal of Service Awards are Judith L. Ganton and Renell Weathers.

The King Medal of Service Award recognizes individuals or groups of individuals in Jackson County for their community service, presented by the College. Winners are nominated by community leaders, college officials, elected officials and previous winners for their service.

Judith Ganton is co-owner and chief operating officer for Ganton Retirement Centers who has served on numerous community groups. She has been a volunteer with Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, and Ella Sharp Museum; served on the United Way Board, Cascades Humane Society Board, Foote Hospital Auxiliary, and the American Cancer Society Board; and supported the Florence Crittenton Services, Aware Shelter, Higby Street Church of Christ Fall Festival, Spring Arbor University, Jackson Community College, churches and schools in Kenya, Africa, and more. She has been honored with the Susan B. Anthony Award, and the National Public Education Lifesaver Award.

Renell Weathers is senior district representative for U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer, and she has served the community in numerous ways. Weathers has been a volunteer with the United Way and the Jackson Democratic Party; served on the Lily Missions Center Board of Directors, Jackson Community Foundation Legacy Scholarship Steering Committee, Community Foreclosure Coalitions Steering Committee, Jackson Nonprofit Network and Cascades Revive the Pride Board; supported the JCC Sisters of Strength, Jackson Citizen Patriot Warm the Children, and Girl Scouts; and served as the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Committee organizer.

JCC will recognize these recipients at its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, planned for 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 in the Potter Center. Ticket prices for the King celebration dinner are $20 for adults and $15 for students, and may be purchased at the Martin Luther King Center, 1107 Adrian St., Jackson, or at the JCC Potter Center Ticket Office, 517.796.8600. ###
