JCC trustees approve campus housing

To meet the needs of students looking for campus housing at Jackson Community College, the Board of Trustees in December approved a new rental housing unit at the Summit Township campus.

Campus housing will help to address the needs of local students who want to live on a college campus, and current and future students traveling a significant distance to campus. Enhancing the campus community also falls in line with the College's strategic plan for improved Student Life initiatives. A 2004 survey indicated that as many as 300 students would be interested in living on campus if housing was available.

The building will be a three-story apartment structure, with 24 suites with space for four occupants in each unit. Total number of beds for the complex would be 100. Estimated cost of construction would be $5.65 million. The project would be paid for by revenue bonds paid for by resident's rental money, with no funding coming from tax revenues. A project manager and architect have been selected for the project, and JCC would seek bids from local contractors if the project moves forward.

College officials hope the new structure would help to increase enrollment and stall enrollment declines. The College has researched other Michigan community college systems that offer student housing, including Alpena, Kirtland, North Central, and Northwestern Michigan College.
