Cyber defenders: JCC students to participate in anti-hacking competition

Jackson Community College students will participate in the first Michigan/Ohio Collegiate Cyber Defense competition to be held at Eastern Michigan University on Feb. 16 through 18.

The competition’s objectives are for students to build a secure network and take preventative measures to protect it from professional hackers. The network that the students build will be put under attack by a professional computer network penetration company. Speakers from the Turkish National Police and Department of Homeland Security are scheduled to address the students.

JCC students participating in the event include Ryan Bradley, Allison Dunphy, Brandon A. Erlacher, Aaron Gustwiller, Darrell Jones, Karl Murray, Mark Williams, and Chris Sturgill, team captain. The group’s advisor is Assistant Professor Larry Choate.

There will be teams from these institutions: Washtenaw Community College, JCC, Davenport University (Kalamazoo), Baker College (Flint), and from Ohio, Lakeland Community College, Rhodes State Community College, and Lorain County Community College.

Awards will be presented on Sunday at the close of the event. All competition will take place on the campus of EMU. The winner from this competition will be invited to participate in the regional competition.
