Jackson Community Concert Band welcomes Young Artist winner to March 4 concert

The Jackson Community Concert Band’s 20th season continues with a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 4 in the Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center.

The concert will feature euphonium soloist Bryan Mangiavellano, the 2007 Young Artist Competition winner. Mangiavellano, who is the director of bands at Jackson Northwest High School, will perform Rhapsody for Euphonium by James Curnow.

The Young Artist Competition is designed to encourage young musicians to prepare significant solo works with the goal of performing with the Jackson Community Concert Band. Auditions are held in January, and the winner is featured in the March concert and given a cash prize of $300. The competition is funded by a grant from the Jackson Community College Foundation.

The band will also perform Festive Overture by Dimitri Shostakovich, Armenian Dances by Alfred Reed, O Cool is the Valley by Vincent Persichetti, the ballet suite Pineapple Poll by Sir Arthur Sullivan and Spoon River by Percy Grainger. An aggressive and exciting program of great music!

The Jackson Community Concert Band is comprised of JCC students and community members, under the direction of Ron Douglass, associate professor of music. Tickets for the concert are $6, which includes $1 restoration fee, and may be purchased at the Potter Center Ticket Office, 517.796.8600.
