The honor roll recognizes institutions of higher education that encourage and support noteworthy student community service efforts. Service learning brings together meaningful community service with instruction and reflection. Students put to work what they are learning inside the classroom in real-world situations. For example, JCC nursing students have taken blood pressure readings at Jackson Crossing Mall and other events, accounting students have helped prepare income tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, teacher education students have taught lessons to school children, nursing students help with Head Start children’s health screenings and more. Service Learning Coordinator Shannon Zoet has worked to help develop the service learning area at JCC. “All of the research and reports that I read show that service learning is definitely an increasing trend in education,” Zoet said. “We are very pleased to be honored for what we have done here at JCC.” The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.
