JCC’s Patricia Kelley Emerson named to USA Today All-Academic First Team

Jackson Community College is pleased to announce that student Patricia Kelley Emerson has been named to the All-USA Academic First Team for two-year colleges by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. In addition, she is the New Century Scholar for the state of Michigan.

Each year, USA Today, Phi Theta Kappa honor society and the American Association of Community Colleges honor the All-USA Academic Team of 60 outstanding two-year college students. First, Second and Third Teams, each consisting of 20 members, are selected. First team members received $2,500 from USA Today and $2,000 from Coca-Cola.

Emerson, of Brooklyn, is a 33-year-old mother of three who is studying biology at JCC. She is president of JCC’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Alpha Rho Lambda chapter. She has been a Student Ambassador and Student Parliament member, and attended Michigan Campus Compact’s Student Service Leadership Camp. In 2005 she was selected as one of 30 students enrolled in a summer program at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory.

The New Century Scholars Program is sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges, the Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, and Phi Theta Kappa. It honors student who receive the highest All-USA Academic Team application score in each state. Fifty student winners are selected from across the nation.
