College to launch new Army ROTC program with EMU, SAU

Jackson Community College will offer a new Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, or ROTC, program this Fall, presented in cooperation with Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and Spring Arbor University (SAU).

Students can earn scholarships through ROTC, and may transfer to a four-year school to complete the Advanced ROTC program. JCC will offer four courses, which will be held at SAU and taught by professors from EMU. Eastern has had a longstanding partnership with the U.S. Army, and SAU has an established ROTC program.

Military Science and Leadership (MSL) courses will include:

  • MSL 101 Foundations of Officership (2 credits)
  • MSL 102 Basic Leadership (2 credits)
  • MSL 201 Individual Leadership Studies (2 credits)
  • MSL 202 Leadership and Teamwork (2 credits)

Two courses are included in the upcoming Fall schedule, MSL 101 and 201. Students working toward a bachelor’s degree may complete a minor in military science and leadership with their first two years at JCC, and transfer to EMU to finish.

A U.S. Army ROTC representative will have office hours by appointment on JCC’s campus for students interested in learning more about the program. For more information, contact Captain Dennis Berry at dberry6@emich.edu. For general information about ROTC, students may visit the web site at www.goarmy.com/rotc.
