Nov. 28, 2007 For immediate release MLK Medal of Service Award winners announcedJackson Community College is pleased to announce the winners of the 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King Medal of Service Awards, to Janice Sweet Fairley and Pastor Frank Hampton Jr. The King Medal of Service Award recognizes individuals or groups of individuals in Jackson County for their community service, presented by Jackson Community College. Sweet Fairley current works as a director with NCO Financial Systems, and worked for Ameritech for many years. In 1998, she was the first woman elected as president of the local chapter of the NAACP. Sweet Fairley has mentored many young people and has served on many different boards through out our community. She is a former recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Award for community service. Hampton has served as pastor of the Church of God at 140 W. South Street for more than 35 years. His ministry has reached throughout the Jackson community, touching thousands of lives. Hampton has worked closely with the Judicial Court Systems and has volunteered with local jails, prisons, hospitals, and countless other organizations within our community. He has helped many youth with job placement and has supported various local scholarships. These recipients will be honored at the 2008 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dinner, planned for 6 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Community Events Center on the Jackson campus.
