JCC welcomes new resident director for Campus View

April Sue Platt is excited to be part of the new student housing community Campus View.

Platt will serve as the Director of Residence Life of the new living and learning community, acting as a building manager and guide for residents and helping to develop programming.

“It’s exciting to be able to play a main role in develop-ing a new community and be part of an institution going through a lot of exciting development and growth,” Platt said. “Being in a completely new build-ing where the faucets have never been turned on, it’s all pretty phenomenal.”

Platt looks forward to working with the new resi-dent system and helping to introduce the campus fac-ulty and staff to residen-tial living on campus. She has worked in residence life at other institutions for several years. Originally from Waldron in Hillsdale County, she attended Olivet College and completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology, then worked for a year at the Manor Foundation in Jonesville. She worked for two years at the University of Akron (Ohio) with residence hall activities and earned her master’s degree in higher education ad-ministration. She then went to Case Western Reserve University for a year, worked with Americorps briefly, and then returned to the University of Akron as their residence life coordinator.

Campus View will be different than many other residence halls because students will have complete units, with their own bedrooms and a full kitchen where they can cook, which “may be exciting for some and frightening for others,” she said. It will add more life to campus having 90-plus students living on site.

“Any time students go to college there is friendship building and growth. The bonus about having a residential component is that you have people there to help you get through that transition, hopefully creating bonds and some lifelong friends,” Platt said. “Really what we’re here for is to help them with growth and development, and to provide support and get linked to campus. I hope this will be exciting for everyone!”
