Dining Island:counter and four stools
Living Room:sofa, end table, coffee table, two lounge chairs
Bathrooms:double sinks, shower, toilet, shelves for linens
Bedrooms:single bed with standard mattress and box springs, nightstand, desk, chair, armoire, chest of drawers.

Common areas shared by residents of Campus View include a TV room with a large screen, plasma TV and a fireplace, a laundry room, several group study rooms, a convenience store, and a patio. Mail boxes are located outside, near the main entrance.

Why housing at a community college? The college experience is not limited to the classroom. A big part of the college experience is learning to weigh choices, make decisions, and grow into responsible adults. Students living on their own face many challenges, which, when under the guidance of college professionals, can become invaluable learning experiences. That experience does not need to happen hundreds of miles from home. JCC can provide a full college experience for your student at the low community college tuition rate.

What Parents Need to Know about Housing

Supervision

Campus View employs a Housing Director who lives in the middle of the second floor. The other floors each have a Resident Assistant (RA) who supervises students, ensures that safety rules are followed, and serves as a resource to students. Campus View is supervised by our Assistant Dean of Student Life, who has a strong background in running campus housing operations at other universities and colleges.

Security

In addition to the Director and RAs, campus security will patrol Campus View. While there are emergency exits, there is just one main entrance, which is supervised by housing staff. Residents gain access to the building and their suites by their Student ID swipe cards. Additionally, Campus View is within three miles of Summit township police and fire departments and are fully equipped with smoke alarms, sprinkler systems and emergency exits.

Discipline

Students are held to the code of conduct detailed in the Housing Manual in addition to the Students Rights and Responsibilities. Violations are handled as described in these publications. Students will be able to participate in the Student Judicial system, adding to their experience of being responsible citizens in the Campus View community.

Roommates

Housing assignments are made by the Housing Director based on student preferences. Students in Campus View, however, need to be full-time JCC students and single. While floors are co-ed, apartments are not. Disputes with roommates will be resolved under the guidance of the RAs and the Housing Director.

Guests

Students will only be allowed overnight guests by permission of the Housing Director.

Social Workers

JCC contracts with social workers to provide individual assistance with life’s challenges and personal crises. Campus View residents will have access to this service.

Applications

See www.jccmi.edu/campusview for applications, deadlines and housing contract information.

Prepare for Life at Campus View

While Campus View provides the basics, students will need to bring their personal items, including standard single sheets and bedding, towels, kitchen utensils, dishes, pots and pans, a laundry basket, laundry supplies, kitchen supplies, and cleaning supplies. Students may want additional items such as computers and televisions. Encourage your student to contact his or her roommates ahead of time to determine who will provide what items.

  • Sheets
  • Pillow and bedding
  • Towels
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Desk lamp
  • Storage units for linens
  • Kitchen supplies and utensils
  • Cookware
  • Appliances (coffeemaker, toaster)
  • Dishes, silverware, glasses, mugs
  • Plastic wraps, storage containers
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Broom and dust pan
  • Waste baskets
  • Vacuum or carpet sweeper
  • Laundry basket and supplies
  • Computer
  • Cell phone
  • Television

While Campus View provides the basics, students will need to bring their personal items. Shared items can be a source of contention for roommates. Students generally can work this out in two basic ways. One is to pool equal amounts of money from each student to buy items all would use, such as cleaning supplies and some food items. Another is to divide the responsibility for various areas or items equally among the roommates. This will be a great opportunity for you student to learn how to work with others and how to come to consensus.

Another source of contention is cleaning. Some students have a high tolerance level for mess and dust. Others do not. Here again, your student will learn how to work with others, accept differences, resolve issues and come to consensus. Students will need to decide who is responsible for what and how to hold each other accountable.

Campus View will offer your student a valuable experience in being a college student and in living independently at a tuition and fee rate much lower than universities. It is a great way for your student to find out what apartment and college life is like without being too far away or paying too much.
