Honors Program a possibility in JCC’s future

JCC’s Academic Issues Committee is studying the possibility of adding an honors program.

‘I Never Saw Another Butterfly’ explored lives of Jewish children in Holocaust

“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” told the story of the 15,000 children who passed through Terezin, a stop-off on the way to the gas chambers in Auschwitz. Of the 15,000 Jewish children who passed through Terezin between 1942 and 1945, only about 100 children were alive to return home when it was liberated at the end of the war.

If we were to pose the question, “Who did you vote for student body president?” what kind of answers should we expect to find?

For health, for happiness: Why I am having gastric bypass surgery

Have you ever had major surgery done? Because I haven’t. Not even in the slightest. Yeah, I had my adenoids removed when I was 4, but does that even count? I, however, am about to undertake a really serious surgery. In December, I’m having gastric bypass surgery at the Barix Clinics in Ypsilanti.

Emerson chosen as student body president

Jim Emerson emerged as victor in JCC's student body election.

Hancock to try again next year

Amber Hancock was the runner up this year for student body president.  She was disappointed by not being able to get the most votes, but will make a point to try again next year.

Willis to lead men's hoops

John Willis will serve as JCC's assistant men's basketball coach for the 2007 season.

Borat: Not Your Mother’s Movie

 Borat is one of the most intensely hilarious films made, but for many, the humor will go unnoticed. Borat is a faux documentary about a Kazakhstani journalist who has come to the United States to learn about the American way of life. The film opens to Borat being followed by a large crowd in a small village. His opening lines say it all. “My name-a Borat. I like you. I like sex. It’s nice.” And from there, the humor doesn’t stop.

Crist, Medlar elected to the JCC board

Trustee Christina L. Medlar retained her seat on the govering board for another six years, while newcomer John M. Crist, a Jackson banker, was elected to his first term, replacing long-time trustee George E. Potter.

Real poems, real students, really good coffee

Around Bert Walker Hall, there is this little orange flier in hallways and classrooms with black lettering trying to catch your attention.  Has it?  If you didn’t have a chance to look at it, it is a flier promoting  poetry night at the Nomad Bookhouse, owned by Bridget Rothenberger, a JCC graduate in Jackson.

Vote for Jenkins in 2008

With Election Day upon us, things can get confusing. Do I vote straight ticket, or do I split my ticket and vote for a Democratic governor and a Republican councilman? There are “vote for me” banners and signs along roads and in yards across the city. One election to follow closely if you are a JCC student, faculty member or employee is the election of two board of trustee seats.

Join JCC student Canena Adams in collecting coats and warm clothing to distribute to the needy.

"Little Mary Sunshine" sparkles

The musical “Little Mary Sunshine” is a collage of witty and funny scenes that poke fun at old time favorites. It takes to the stage the last two weekends in October. How to get there: If you haven’t seen it go and check it out, Oct. 27, and 28 at 8 p.m. in the Baughman Theatre, Potter Center, and Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $8 for students and senior citizens and $10 for adults. Enrollment increase: The good, the bad, the parking

  Students are just piling into JCC.  Not only has enrollment increased, but more students are also staying full time and are getting more in class hours.

The dorms are coming! The dorms are coming!

Many students are waiting with baited breath for the dorms to be erected on campus for the 2007-2008 schoolyear.  JCC is building 24 furnished apartments that hold four residents each.

2006-2007 Potter Center Performance Season Lacks Student Relevant Acts

The 2006-2007 Potter Center schedule is curiously devoid of musicians and acts that are targeted towards a college-aged demographic.

Millage vote: Better to wait than to lose again

What is a millage? By definition, a millage is a property tax rate stated in terms of tenths of cents per dollar of property value. Confused? So are we. In English, that means when the millage is increased, homeowners and businesses pay more taxes.

JCC May Lose Out On State Funds After Nixing Millage Request

Sept. 16, 2006 - At an emergency meeting Aug. 28, Jackson Community College board of trustees decided against placing a millage request on the Nov. 7 ballot.

 

Expanded growth of JCC@Vo-Tech exceeding expectations

Ask anyone around the JCC@Vo-Tech campus, and they’ll tell you that having an opportunity for an affordable education in their area has been a blessing. Such a blessing, in fact, students from all over Lenawee County have flocked to the new satellite location in Adrian. Since its opening in the fall of 2003, the enrollment of JCC@Vo-Tech has expanded significantly.

 

Vandal destroys art

A controversial Constitution Day art installation was dismantled following student protest, but was returned by the order of the college president.

 

JCC can decide to play or not to play

In April, the JCC board of trustees announced that the school would bring back the sports program.

 

Digital photo class begins

 Many people are very excited to hear that there has been an addition to the fall 2006 schedule.

 

No reason to be bored, JCC dean says

Stephen Bloomfield is the Assistant Dean for Student Life here at JCC, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at him. Dressed casual in slacks and a cotton shirt, Bloomfield is excited about being interviewed.

 

Welcome back to The Phoenix!

Symbols are all around us. We see them everyday, so much that we identify products with the symbol rather than the opposite. There is the Geico gecko, the Budweiser frogs, and the coolest dog in the world besides Snoopy, Spuds McKenzie. Simply by association, we recognize these commercial figures. In the same way, the silver and blue lion on the helmets of the Detroit Lions is a symbol of pride to all true Detroit Lions fans.
