Jackson Community College's administrative team is taking on extra work so it can create new jobs elsewhere in the college.

Joyce Lockman, dean of occupational education, is retiring. Christine Beacco, will take over her job. Charlotte Finnegan will acquire Beacco's title and responsibilities as dean of student services, as well as keep her own as dean of foundation studies.

These changes, scheduled to take effect May 1, will affect faculty members but should not directly affect JCC students, said Finnegan. The savings in combining the jobs will be used to hire others, she said, although she couldn't specify which jobs would be created.

"I'm excited . and a little nervous (to take on an additional job)," said Finnegan. "Balancing my time might be a challenge."

But, she said, the support staff is excellent, and she's looking forward to working with them.

"I look forward to the unity of having foundational studies connect with student services. Other community colleges are following the same model - connecting enrollment and retention," Finnegan said.

Finnegan graduated from JCC and began teaching part-time in 1980. She became an adviser in 1999 and has been dean of foundational studies for three years.

"I've been (in student services) before," Finnegan said. "I know (what to expect)."

"Charlotte will do a wonderful job (as dean of student services)," Beacco said.

Beacco began her JCC career in the registrar's office and has worked with students for more than 10 years. She has been dean of student services for three years.

"I'm excited and anxious at the same time," Beacco said. "I will have less student contact. (As the dean of occupational studies) the focus will be on the programs. . I will work more with the faculty."
