Books Made Easy By Shonda Betz Staff Writer
College books can seem overpriced and the hassle of dealing with long lines and frustrating searching at the book store can make the situation even worse. Here are five tips to ease the stress of buying and selling books for your next semester classes:
Tip #1: Always keep receipts. The bookstore always prints receipts with the offer of giving a full refund. Depending on when your class starts, you are either eligible for a full refund within the first two weeks of the semester, the first seven calendar days of the class or if the books are returned within two days of their original purchase. On the first day of class discuss with the instructor how frequently you will be using your book. Remember that every instructor is different. If you will not be using y our book often, you may want to make arrangements to share materials with a classmate and consider returning your book and receipt for a full refund.
Tip # 2: Buy or borrow books from friends. Many times, if you know someone who has taken a class before you, it is possible to buy or borrow books from them for less than the bookstore. Also, if the bookstore has run out of needed materials and you know someone who has what you need, it may be quicker to get it from them.
Tip # 3: Go used. Although brand new books have no wear and tear, they are also more expensive and it isn’t very likely that you are going to get what you paid for. Used books are less expensive, can still be sold back to the bookstore after you are through, and save you up to 25%.
Tip # 4: Sell back early. If you are a focused student and take detailed notes you may not be required to use your book the weeks before and of final exams. You may also want to consider keeping homework assignments and quizzes to help you study at the end of the semester. Discuss this with your instructor. Returning books earlier reduces the chance that the bookstore will be overstocked and will refuse to buy your materials back. However, if you need the book to help study, this is not a good option.
Tip # 5: Keep your books in tip-top shape. The less damage your book endures the more money you will get when you are ready to sell it back. Use a backpack or tote to keep the books covered and from danger. Keep books and other materials away from food and liquids to prevent staining the pages. Also, use a thin bookmark and do not keep things folded within the pages. You should not crease the pages to keep your place. |
