An interview with the head of Jackson's NAACP

By James Jenkins

The Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the Community Center on the campus of Jackson Community College, Jan. 19, 2008 was a memorable event for all in attendance. Among those who came to event was Arlene Robinson, President of the Jackson chapter of the NAACP.

After dinner was served and the event was over, Robinson shared her thoughts on the event, gave advice to the youth and spoke of upcoming events scheduled for the NAACP in the near future.

THE PHOENIX: How long have you been president of the Jackson Chapter of the  NAACP?

ROBINSON: Let me see, it was 2005. Yes, 2005, that’s 3 years now.

THE PHOENIX: What did you think of tonight's event?

ROBINSON: It was great. It is always a pleasure to see people honored who have been through the struggle receive recognition for their hard work and dedication to the cause. To honor Dr. King’s memory in such a way really means a lot. I feel blessed and honored to be here.

THE PHOENIX: Are there any programs or activities coming up in the community that you want to talk about?

ROBINSON: Our next planning session is (Jan. 26). It is our goal to get all committees together for career day. There will be eight committees responsible for two events each. I am excited about that. There will be at least 12 events scheduled, maybe more. There will be a job fair as well.  Our education committee is dedicated to helping the youth and young people in the community.

THE PHOENIX: Is there anything you want to say to the youth, and advice you want to give?

ROBINSON: Never give up. Always move forward. Set goals and go after them. You are responsible for making your dream. Only you can give it life. Do not let anyone stop you or tell you that you can not succeed. With education, faith and belief in self you can reach and accomplish all you set your mind to. Always move forward, stay positive, and keep God first. Nothing is impossible.
