What Not To do In Michigan
We all break the law at sometime or another in our life. Who hasn’t crossed an intersection when the “Don’t Walk” sign was flashing? However, did you know that there is a law on the books in Michigan that states “a wife’s hair legally belongs to her husband?”
Well, in case you didn’t know it, we at The Phoenix have taken the time to list several useless or little known laws and facts that relate to our fabulous state of Michigan. Some are old laws that are no longer valid, while others are old and still in the books today just not enforced.
Strange but true Michigan Law #1; any person over the age of 12 may have a license for a handgun as long as he/she has not been convicted of a felony. It’s okay to buy a gun but not alcohol.
• In Detroit, couples are not allowed to make love in an automobile unless the act takes place while the vehicle is parked on the couple's own property.
• In Detroit, it is illegal to sleep in a bathtub.
• In Rochester, anyone bathing in public must have his or her bathing suit inspected by a police officer.
• It is legal for a robber to file a lawsuit, if he or she got hurt in your house.
• It's illegal in Michigan for a person under the age of 21 to give a gift of alcohol beverage to anyone, even to a person of legal age.
• Smoking while in bed is illegal.
• The use of the names of dead presidents to sell alcohol in Michigan is prohibited.
• Under an 1889 law, the health officer of East Jordan could send any nonresident with an infectious disease back to where he came from, as long as the person could travel. If not, the officer could rent a house for use as a pest house.
Makes you wonder who was in charge and what were they thinking? Hopefully this list will keep you out of jail. The next time you are in Detroit and want to get a few extra winks in, make sure you don’t fall asleep in the tub. You might wake up in handcuffs.
