Medical Office Support

The Medical Office Support program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work in the health care field as a medical receptionist or medical secretary.

Of all administrative assistant specialties, medical secretaries is the only occupation that is expected to have a much faster than average employment growth. Medical secretaries perform secretarial duties using specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, or laboratory procedures. Duties may include scheduling appointments, billing patients, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports, and correspondence.

The Medical Office Support students will learn basic administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, telephone techniques, business correspondence, and customer service. Students will also become well versed in medical terminology, anatomy, health care law and ethics, HIPAA, and medical coding and billing. This program also includes a strong emphasis on medical records, including how to utilize the Electronic Medical Record. Additionally, students of the MOS program will learn basic clinical skills which include Blood Borne Pathogen training, performing vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure, and patient interview techniques.

Salary ranges: $21,410 – $45,860 per year

Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the national Certified Medical Administrative Assistant credential through the National Healthcareer Association - CMAA. Graduates of the program can expect to find positions in areas such as physician offices, hospitals, clinics, laboratories, dentists offices, and offices of other health care practioners with an annual wage between $21,410 and $45,860.
