Ann Flint

Ann Flint, program coordinator for JCC’s new respiratory care curriculum, has seen many changes over her 26 years as a respiratory therapist.

Flint joined the faculty at Jackson Community College in the Fall and has developed and written the new curriculum for the program.

Growing up, Flint was interested in health care from a young age and from age 8 wanted to become a doctor. Like most people, she only knew of two possible health careers, doctor or nurse. At age 16, she attended a Summer Exploratory Experience in Flint where she worked alongside different allied health professionals in three areas, radiology, physical therapy, and respiratory therapy. From the first day she spent with respiratory therapists, she loved it.

“Respiratory therapists were involved directly with patient care, helping people with breathing and cardiac problems, and I thought, ‘What could be more important than this?’” Flint said.

Flint completed her respiratory therapy training and earned an associate degree from Carteret Technical College in North Carolina. She earned a bachelor’s degree in health care education from the University of Michigan, and a master’s degree in occupational education from Ferris State University.

Flint serves on staff at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor and has taught respiratory care at Washtenaw Community College, Ferris State University and Monroe County Community College.

“Respiratory care as a field has grown and changed with all of the developments in health care. New equipment, new drugs and improvements in many areas of health care have all had an impact,” she said. “There is a lot of variety in what you can do.”
