LAND Creative Writing Competition

Jackson College Procedures
Deadline: December 2, 2013

The Liberal Arts Network for Development holds a creative writing competition in three categories:

  • Fiction
  • Poetry
  • Essay

Selecting Jackson College Entries

Our local competition will be coordinated by Finch Roberts, Jackson College's representative on the LAND Steering Committee. Professors can nominate entries written during the 2013 calendar year. This includes Winter, Spring, and Summer semesters as well as writing completed during the Fall semester.

To nominate one of your students, please complete the application form located at the LAND website and forward it with the fiction, poem, or essay to Finch@jccmi.edu no later than 2 December 2013.

Please do not have students submit manuscripts directly to Finch Roberts . All manuscripts must be nominated by a faculty member. It would be helpful if you only submit one manuscript per e-mail and use "2013 LAND Creative Writing Contest" as the subject line of your e-mail.

A local judging committee will select our entries from those submitted and then forward the winning essays to LAND.

Creative Writing Journals

Beginning in 2009, LAND has published the winning entries for the Creative Writing Competition in on-line journals. Please feel free to share the link to these journals with your students: landconference.org/journals.html.

About the LAND Conference

The 2014 LAND Conference will be hosted by Delta College and held at the Doubletree by Hilton in Bay City, Michigan from February 13-14, 2014. The format for this year’s conference has changed to add a new student competition. The 2014 conference will feature lightning talks given by faculty, administrators, and students. New this year: Awards will be given for the best presentations. There is also a new pricing structure which makes it less expensive to attend the entire conference.

The LAND Student Scholars Conference will take place on February 15 where special sessions will be created for faculty and students to interact together. Winners of the LAND student competitions will be recognized at the February 15 lunch.

In addition to the Student Scholars competition, LAND will continue to host the creative writing competition, illustration competition, and fine arts competition as well as a new digital literacy competition. The deadline for all competitions is December 9, 2013. This is also the deadline for the nominations for the LAND Institution Award.
