HESI RN Admission Assessment (A2)
As of February 2010, the standardized nursing admission assessment was changed from the NET to the HESI RN Admission Assessment (A2). The HESI A2 evaluates basic academic skills found to be important to students’ success in the nursing program. Skill areas covered on the assessment are math, reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar. In addition, learning style and personality profile modules will be included.
To prepare for the HESI A2, students may consider purchasing the study guide published by Mosby/Elsevier titled the "Admission Assessment Exam Review", third edition (Print Book ISBN: 9781455703333; eBook ISBN: 9781455738298). The study guide is available for purchase in the JC Book Store, on reserve in the Library or for use in the Center for Student Success.

What is the HESI A2?
The HESI A2 is an assessment that measures a student’s Basic Math and English skills. The assessment is divided into two areas; an Academic Section and a Personal Assessment Section.
The required modules in the Academic Section are:
- Reading Comprehension
The HESI A2 is not an assessment of nursing knowledge; however, for the Vocabulary Section, students will need to be familiar with general vocabulary words used in the health care field.
The Personal Assessment Section consists of a learning style assessment and a personality profile. The Personal Assessments are intended to give the student information about their study habits and academic dispositions.
Why do I have to take the HESI A2?
The HESI A2 is designed to assess an applicant’s academic readiness and predictor for success in the nursing program. Students who do not meet standard scores in math and reading comprehension are more likely to have difficulty with the rigors of the nursing curriculum. Conversely, students who have high scores tend to do well. HESI A2 results are utilized, along with other program admission requirements, to determine a student’s eligibility to be accepted into a nursing program. Minimum scores are required for entry into the ADN and LPN to ADN programs.
Applicants to the PN program must take the HESI RN Admission Assessment (A2) but minimum scores are not required at this time.
You must be, or become, a Jackson College student to take the HESI A2.
What scores do I need to achieve and what do the scores mean?
Minimum scores of 75% in Math and 75 % in English Composite are required. The English Composite score is the average of the reading comprehension vocabulary and grammar sections. The scores are intended to direct the student in identifying academic strengths and areas for improvement. Based on the scores, students may benefit from remedial activities.
When should I take the HESI A2?
Students should plan on taking the HESI A2 after completing any developmental courses in reading, writing and/or math; and after the prerequisite Math course is completed. Students are advised to take the assessment early enough in the sequence of pre-requite courses to allow time to improve skills and retake if necessary. Kimberly Seaburg, the Nursing Advisor, can assist you in planning the right time to take the HESI A2. You can schedule an appointment with Kimberly at 517.796.8452 or SeaburgKimberlG@jccmi.edu.
The HESI A2 must be completed by:
- June 20: for Fall ADN applicants
- July 18: for Fall LPN-ADN applicants
- November 7: for Winter ADN & PN applicants
THE HESI A2 DOES NOT HAVE TO BE TAKEN
THE NURSING APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED.
Maintain a copy of your HESI A2 scores for your records.
How many times can I take the HESI A2?
The HESI A2 can be taken a maximum of 3 times. If you do not achieve the minimum scores the first time, you must take time to work on improving the basic academic skills before attempting to take the HESI A2 again. Students who attribute a poor performance on the assessment to a bad day and who rush to take it again without preparation typically have the same result. It takes practice and work to improve scores.
PREVIOUS NET TEST SCORES: Your NET test scores count as your original assessment test. Repeating the NET scores counts in the HESI A2 repeat total.

Each individual exam requires 15-50 minutes to complete, depending on the content. Students will have 4 hours to complete the required HESI A2 from the sign in process through the academic and personal assessment sections.
