I'm Interested in Becoming a Teacher.

What questions do I need to ask myself?

By Mary C. Belknap, Education Coordinator, Jackson Community College

  • What subject will I teach?
  • Where will I transfer?
  • What grade level will I teach?
  • When do I apply to my transfer school and their school of education?
  • What does my transfer school of education require to get into their program?
  • When will I take the Basic MTTC Skills Test?
  • Is my transfer school of choice able to certify me in the area I would like to teach?
  • Is the subject area I would like to teach in certifiable?
  • How many courses/credits are required for my teaching major/minor?
  • Does the transfer institution require major/minor courses?
  • Where do I want teach? City/State
  • Does my city/state/community need teachers in my desired teaching subject?
  • Is there a sequence to the course work in my teaching "major" subject?
  • How many students are admitted to the school of education?
  • Have I applied to get into the transfer school? When are their "school of education" admission dates?
  • What is the GPA requirement, if any, to get into my transfer school of education?
  • When will I take my subject matter tests for certification?
  • What type of teaching certificate do I want to pursue?
  • Have I ever been convicted of a felony? Misdemeanor?
  • Would I be "clean" on a criminal investigation check through the Michigan Investigation Bureau?
  • What is the salary for a first year teacher in Michigan? Will that meet my expenses?
