On Sunday, December 3rd, the 19th Annual Advent Festival of Choirs at St. Mary’s took place, organized by Susan Berendes-Wood (LLA). Linda Killian(NUR) sang in the St. Rita’s choir.

Jim Scott (HPF) is finishing a book on managing stress and living well during his sabbatical this year. He is also developing an online Stress/Wellness course.

During her sabbatical Marina Martinez-Kratz (NUR) is preparing for preliminary exams for a PhD at the University of Michigan’s School of Nursing. She is focusing on how brain changes in infants and toddlers dictate eating and activity patterns in later life.

Sharon MacKellar (SCI) made two presentations at the Michigan Science Teachers Association meetings in March. The first session, “Motivate Your Molecules,” helps high school students prepare for and succeed in college. The second, “Solar Sensations,” helps students make low cost solar science projects to view solar flares and sunspots.

George Econ (SCI) co-presented at an all-day workshop in March designed for middle school and high school teachers. This was the conclusion to two methods workshops entitled “Earth Science By Design,” keyed to national, state and local benchmarks for learning.

Tom McMillen-Oakley (LLA) won an award in the 42nd Annual MEA/MAEA Exhibit for his digital print “Saugatuck Summer.” His print was featured by the MEA in the 2006 Art Acquisitions Purchase Exhibition. Tom also lectured in Sheryl Deeg’s Humanities class at Jackson High School, teaching students how to look at art, how to interpret what they see, and how to begin a dialogue about what is good and what is bad about a particular piece.

Tom Fleming (Prof. Stud) and his Criminal Justice and Corrections students were the recipients of a “Respect the Law” award by the Optimist Club of Jackson at its May 4th luncheon.

In May, Mary Belknap, (LLA) Geri Jacobs, (LLA) Marian Burlingham (Foundation Studies) attended the Community College National Center for Community Engagement’s 15th annual conference in Mesa, Arizona. The conference Theme was “Enlightenment: The Evolution of Change” - possibilities for the future of service learning and civic engagement for faculty, staff and students. Mary Belknap was a presenter.

Ted Miller (LLA) was the recipient of the Michigan Developmental Education Consortium’s “Outstanding Service to Developmental Students Award.” Ted was presented a plaque at the MDEC Conference on March24th.

Barbara Stockton (Foundation Studies received a plaque from the National Association for Developmental Education in recognition of “Outstanding Service on the Awards Committee of the NADE 2002-2006.” She will be in charge of organizing the proposal readings for the breakout sessions at the 2007 conference.

Steve Christian (Prof Stud) attended the Fall Accounting Educators conference on Nov. 3 with 4 students at Oakland University. He serves on the Michigan Association of CPAs Educators Task Force the Spring Educators Conference Planning Committee.

Jan Bradford (SCI) has spearheaded the initiative to incorporate a plastinated cadaver into the Anatomy and Physiology courses, in cooperation with the University of Michigan from whom we received the cadaver. This summer A & P faculty, Dr. Glenn Fox, Dr. Pat Visser, and Jan Bradford completed the dissection of the cadaver which was subsequently preserved at the U of M Plastination Lab and delivered to JCC. The A&P faculty including Victor Marshall, developed a respect policy for the cadaver.

Dr. Mark Ott (SCI) was featured on the JTV show Home for Dinner, creating a chicken parmesan dish and a very chocolate dessert.

Laura Thurlow's (SCI) and Tom Fleming's (Prof Stud) courses are the recipients of a donation from the South Central State Employees Credit Union (on Monroe St.) which is funding  the collaborative effort between Science and Criminal Justice. The donation allows students in BIO 131 and Criminalistics courses to use the cutting edge technology of a thermal cycler to begin analysis of DNA. The also pays for several years of materials.
