Martha Petry is the recipient of the 2005 Jackson Community College Faculty Community
Service Learning Award offered through the Michigan Campus Compact. She will
be recognized at an awards ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 16 as part of the 10th
Annual Institute on Service Learning at University of Michigan – Flint.
Ben Vincent and the emergency medical services
instructors have received their three year approval from the Michigan
Department of Health for the College’s four EMS programs.
The National Association of Community College Teacher
Education Programs (NACCTEP) selected JCC to receive a “Best Practice in
Teacher Preparation” award. Mary Belknap will be honored at the March
conference in Atlanta.
Sandy DiCesare along with ten theatre students
helped at the Lyle Torrant Center 6th Annual Pancake Breakfast in
December. Torrant staff and students reported the event a huge success.
Last semester Ron Douglass and his Jazz Ensemble
performed for the Jackson Medical Care Facility and Vista Grand Villa. Along
with the students, Mark Schopmeyer played guitar and Dave Nadolski
sang. In the winter semester the Jazz Ensemble and the African Drum Ensemble
are playing at the Lyle Torrant Center. The Brass Ensemble performs at the
Nomad Book Store and the Ganton Homes.
As part of her sabbatical leave, Paula Ashley Harris
is conducting research on literature curricula at colleges and
universities in Michigan for the program review of JCC literature courses.
She is also working on two writing projects.
Dave DeBaker and John Yohe have initiated
a Poetry Night, held monthly on the fourth Tuesday, at the Thunderbird
Coffeehouse in downtown Jackson. Adjunct faculty Heather Abner and
Kawita Kandpal were featured on January 24th.
Keith Drayton conducted the Broadway Revue in
performance for a forensics tournament at JCC organized by Dave Nadolski.
Glenn Fox has received his Ph.D. from the
University of Michigan. He successfully defended his thesis titled Total
Evidence and the Evolution of Ophidia (Reptilia: Squamata), a study of
snake origins and evolution.
Marina Martinez-Kratz was a panel member of the
Media Summit in December that looked at health care disparities in
minorities. JCC nursing students and community members interested in
improving health in minorities attended.
John Singer organized four community outreach
events this year: a meeting at JCC of the tricounty Chemical Advisory group,
a Jackson County Intermediate School District (ISD) Science teachers meeting
at JCC, science teaching to the Addison Science club, and arranging a
speaker whose topic is “promoting success of our minority students in
science” for the February ISD meeting.
Kawita Kandpal was invited to become Arts and
Entertainment Writer by the editors of Current magazine in Ann Arbor,
Michigan.
Steve Thurlow chaperoned on a Katrina Hurricane
Relief Trip organized by Northwest High School teachers in December. Two JCC
students were junior chaperones and one former JCC adjunct, Al Ferry,
also chaperoned. |
