 Tom McMillen-Oakley (Language Literature & Arts) was recently named Art Educator of the Year by the Michigan Art Education Association in recognition of his role in expanding JCC’s art program.

 Victor Marquardt, Eric Ollila and Anita Johnston (Math) all attended the Michigan MATUC Conference in September where Anita presented “Competency Based Developmental Mathematics with an Online Twist.”                                    

 Mary Belknap (LL&A) recently attended the National Board Meeting of NACCTEP in Washington DC and the MACCEP State Meeting in Grand Rapids.
 George Econ (Science) created a color coded map of soil types as part of his research on the geology of Jackson County. His map uses USDA data which are then combined into geological features and computerized. It has been over thirty years in the making.

 Geri Jacobs (LL&A) attended the NCTE's Summer Institute, "Teaching for Change: Creating Democratic, Inclusive, Holistic Classrooms" in San Diego, this summer.  Geri says, "I came away from the conference with a greater appreciation of my students' literacies and with a stronger commitment not only to help my students learn but also to learn from them." 

 Dave Nadolski (LL&A) has been elected by his peers as chair of the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League in the state. He has taken his forensics/debate team to observe a tournament and they are beginning to compete.

 As members of the Jackson Chorale, Pat Visser (science) and Jean Dennerll  (allied health ) will be singing at the Fall Concert of the Jackson Community Concert Band on November 21st 3pm in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall.

 Libby Warner (science) attended a conference at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Ohio on information for teaching biology.

 Maria Orlowski (LL&A adjunct) brought her students to the Potter Center for a tour as part of her Lenawee Intro to Theatre class.

 Woody Wilson continues his work as faculty advisor for the Behavioral Sciences Department.

Jody Rooney (Math) and Martha Petry (LL&A) travel to Indianapolis for an Assessment Institute in October.
  Sandra Brown (Allied Health) attended a Health Summit in Battle Creek in September.
In the Automotive area, Les Coxon attended an Ann Arbor School Board meeting for recruiting; he and Chris Kaser drove to Grand Rapids for the Toyota Fall business meeting; and  Dan Livingston and Chris Kaser traveled to Saginaw for the AET Seminar.
Jean Dennerll (Allied Health) and Billie Jean Buda (adjunct) attended the Michigan Society of Medical Assistants conference / position on board.
Joe Shackelford (Allied Health) attended a MSRT conference where he learned about accreditation for radiography programs.
Frank Kruszka (Criminal Justice adjunct) took his class to tour the Federal Correction Institution in Milan.
Sue Wood (Computer Information Systems) took her students to tour the printing facility at Ella Sharp Museum.
Shirin Kambin Timms (Behavioral Science) works with the Sewing Circle in Lansing that brings together women at risk from different countries for them to communicate with, help and support each other. They also develop marketable skills. Somali women, Afghan, Kurdish, Sunni and Liberian women receive group counseling for torture trauma and depression. Shirin translates for Afghan women who speak Persian (Farsi).
Heather Abner, Adjunct Faculty Coordinator, organized an event where JCC faculty read their original works. Readers were adjunct faculty Maria Orlowski, Amy Zicafoose, Kawita Kandpal, and new full time faculty Diana Agy from LL&A.
In the nursing department Linda Williams and Paula Hopper are completing the third edition of their textbook, Understanding Medical Surgical Nursing.  Retired faculty Betty Ackley and Gail Ladwig had the seventh edition of their Nursing Diagnosis Handbook published this year.
