JCC program a nice fit with transfer to U-MColette Cremeans found that Jackson Community College was the best option to start her college education. A graduate of Lumen Christi High School, Cremeans started at JCC in the Fall 2004 semester, and worked diligently to complete 59 credit hours during three semesters. She transferred to the University of Michigan this past winter, where she will work toward her bachelor’s degree as a pre-medical student, then head to medical school. Her parents, Curt and Joan Cremeans, both teach at JCC, so that was an attraction for her. JCC also offered a good start financially, and gave her a chance to get her basic credits out of the way before heading to a big university. “I found at JCC, the classes were small and the instructors really care about getting to know you and how best to teach you. I found I really did benefit from that,” she said. “I would definitely say JCC is a good option.” Staying at home with her family gave her added time after high school to plan what she wanted for her future. Cremeans’ interest in the medical field was influenced first by a high school biology teacher, and at JCC by science professors Laura and Steve Thurlow. She made the move from community college to U-M at midyear, but said there were a number of opportunities to get to meet people and get involved in campus activities. Getting ready for her first semester at U-M, she wondered if she would be prepared and keep up, but has since found that she was more than ready and had no trouble keeping up in her classes. “A lot comes down to how much effort you put into your courses. I felt very well prepared; everything was solid material that I needed.” |
