Russell Hinkle
JCC alum gains valuable experience with U-M fellowship
Russell Hinkle plans to someday be an engineer who designs and builds structures that are sound. The engineering transfer student
to the University of Michigan had the firsthand opportunity to help with research thanks to a fellowship program.
Hinkle attended JCC from 2005-‘07, transferring to U-M this past fall. He learned about the Jack Kent Cooke Fellowship Program
while at JCC, which is designed for community college transfer students providing the opportunity to conduct part-time or full-time
summer research. He was one of about 20 students who were accepted, and was the only student from JCC.
Hinkle, who is studying civil engineering, assisted a doctoral student by building a three-dimensional construction model to
test theories and track algorithms.
“I was tracking down parts online, and helping to make a realistic looking construction,” he said.
Hinkle, originally from Spring Arbor, enjoyed subjects like physics and calculus in high school and thought a career as
an engineer would be the right fit. He completed his first four semesters at JCC and was pleased with his classes here, and felt
well-prepared when he transferred to U-M. His fellowship was administered through the Undergrad Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
at Michigan, and Hinkle is exploring future research opportunities.
