Alumni Relations Alumni ProfilesShirley Kuhl
Shirley Kuhl has fond memories of her days at Jackson Junior College. Kuhl attended the junior college immediately after graduating from Jackson High School in 1952. With her original aspirations to be an airline stewardess, an airline school in Chicago recommended she complete two years of college. The junior college was located right next to Jackson High, in John George Hall and the former Marsh Hall, so it was a natural next step. “It was a wonderful student body, the kids were so much fun. And the good memories of the wonderful classes and teachers, I think I liked the close-ness, the teachers were our friends. It was even better than high school could ever be,” Kuhl said. “Classes were smaller so the teachers really took an interest and did extra activities with us. You really got to know the teachers.” Kuhl’s fondest memory is of meeting her husband, Richard, at a Sadie Hawkins Dance. She and Richard got engaged and later married, and she left college to work. Kuhl did an office cooperative job at the accounting firm of Smith, Skutt and Young while at JJC, then went to work as a secretary at Teer Wickwire until she got married. Many of her family members have also attended the College. A sister, Nancy, attended and was a nurse at Foote Health System, a daughter attended and became a licensed practice nurse and now works in Denver, Colo. Another son attended for a while, and two grandsons went to JCC, Justin and Mat-thew Kuhl, and played on the hockey team. Today, she and her husband continue to enjoy the Potter Center entertainment series tickets. The couple also volunteers at Foote Hospital. |
