Designs with a mission

Students donate time, talent
to design T-shirts for cancer fund

JCC students in Elizabeth Hayden’s Winter semester graphic design class had the opportunity to see firsthand how their artwork can help a worthy cause.

Students designed T-shirts as a fund-raiser for Jackson’s Mission of Hope Cancer Fund organization. Students donated their time for this organization in exchange for a professional piece for their student portfolios.

“The project involved students in a learning process from conception to a final product where multiple drafts were reviewed, interaction was with an actual client, changes had to be made, and the final design put in print,” Hayden said. “This not only exposes the student to a real-life project, but gives them the opportunity to contribute to those in the community with needs by simply using their talents.”

Five students’ designs were selected: Christopher Adams, Jackson; Kelly Barnes, Horton; Danielle Crittenden, Jackson; Jessika Kintner, Waldron; and Travis Roberts, Jonesville. Designs were selected for men, women and children.

Rock Mangus, founder and executive director of Mission of Hope, himself a 16-year cancer survivor, said the organization couldn’t be happier with the students’ designs. “It was great to work with the students, to talk with them and meet them. I think it went very well,” Mangus said. Because of the experience with Mission of Hope Cancer Fund and the JCC students, the fund was able to help a family member of one of the students in class.

Mission of Hope Cancer Fund is a non-profit organization founded with the primary purpose of providing director financial assistance to cancer patients and their families. Visit the Mission of Hope web site at cancerfund.org/angelroom.html.
