Jared Wood

2000 - 2001 Nominee

JaredNominated by Aurelie Seward

Jared Wood has worked for two years as a student computer consultant with the Information Technology department. From a group of many deserving students, Jared has been chosen for nomination for Student Employee of the Year because of his varied contributions, excellent teamwork, and flexibility in a constant world of technological change.

Jared began here by learning all he could about networking, software, and hardware support while mastering twenty pieces of software in order to assist JCC’s students and employees. From that beginning, he easily transitioned into teaching new student consultants. His current position as a Senior Advisor for IT student consultants is well deserved and he represents the position as we idealized it.

Jared has taught or is in the process of teaching the entire IT student staff (20-25 students per semester) how to use Quark Xpress, Illustrator, Photoshop, FrontPage, HTML, and Director. This is phenomenal. The software listed here is the most complex software we support. Jared also works one-on-one with faculty assisting their endeavors to place academic courses on-line using Blackboard and learning more about the technology. As well, the Information Technology Education department requested assistance with an open lab for their Novell networking students and Jared has sacrificed his Sundays in order to support this partnership. Each of these contributions is unique and beyond the norm.

He has also developed certification documents for the above software and assisted the Frequently Asked Questions Team with FAQs for the same. In addition, Jared “lived through” two major purchase cycles where he put in untold hours as every computer on campus was replaced or moved. He was, of course, one consultant we would put in charge of a team and knew we had to worry no more.

Teamwork is a major component of our success. Jared has been singled out by his peers as the one consultant always willing to help them. Having Jared as an example of teamwork, professionalism, and constant learning helps our entire department but especially it helps as we try to train new student employees each semester.

Interestingly, Jared does not complain or turn away from the worst of tasks; he regularly brings better ways of doing things to our attention; and never seems to seek attention/praise/gain from his contributions. I think it is time for Jared to receive the recognition he deserves and hope that he will be considered as Student Employee of the Year.
