JOIN
THE INSECT SAFARI
Have
you ever wondered where you can find insects?
How about how many of them can be found on the earth?
Did you know that over one million different types of insects have
been identified on the earth, more than all other animals combined.
Nearly 100,000 species of insects can be found in North America
alone. If you find these
facts to be interesting or if you enjoy looking for insects, then you
should join us on Saturday, September 29 at 10:00 a.m. for an
"Insect Safari."
Insects
can be found everywhere - from the tropics to the tundra, in water,
wood, plants, soil and even inside the bodies of other animals.
The Dahlem Environmental Education Center, a facility of Jackson
Community College, is not the tundra or the tropics, but it is a fantastic
place to look for insects and other crawling creatures.
During this "Insect Safari" a short time will be spent indoors
learning about the characteristics of insects and some other interesting
facts about the invertebrates known as insects.
Safari participants will then venture outdoors in search of as many
insects as they can possibly find in a variety of places and habitats.
Safaris are exciting times. You
never know what fun you may encounter along the trail.
You may even have the chance to venture down "Millipede Mile"
or "Ladybug Lane."
The "Insect Safari" will take place come rain or
shine, so come dressed for the appropriate weather.
The fee for the program is $3.00/person for non-members and free to
members. Participants
are asked to pre-register by calling the Nature Center's office at (517)
782-3453.
