JCC
Students, Local Children to Celebrate 'Day of the Dead'
10 a.m. Wednesday,
October 30, Potter Center
Jackson Community College education students will again celebrate
the "Day of the Dead" on October 30 at JCC's Potter Center.
This is a celebration of the Mexican/Aztec holiday of the Day of
the Dead through Hispanic art and culture. In Mexico, families come
together on this day to honor their ancestors.
They visit gravesites, decorate the graves, prepare meals and tell
stories of lost family members.
Sixth-grade students from Frost Elementary in Jackson will be actively
involved in making traditional Hispanic artifacts relating to the holiday,
under the guidance of students enrolled in education classes at JCC.
In addition the students would be exposed to a variety of
traditional elements of Hispanic life, including a mariachi band,
story-teller, slide show of the celebration in Mexico, traditional foods
and displays.
The
activity is made possible thanks to a grant from the Jackson Community
Foundation's Teacher's Fund. For
more information, contact Tom Oakley, 517-796-8577.
