For immediate release JCC Students, Local Children to Celebrate 'Day of the Dead'12 noon Tuesday, Nov. 2, Potter CenterJackson Community College students will celebrate the "Day of the Dead" on November 2 at JCC's Potter Center. This is a celebration of the Mexican/Aztec holiday of the Day of the Dead through Hispanic art and culture. In Mexico, families come together on this day to honor their ancestors by visiting gravesites, decorating the graves, preparing meals and tell stories of lost family members. Sixth-grade students from Frost Elementary in Jackson will be actively involved in making traditional Hispanic artifacts relating to the holiday, under the guidance of students enrolled in education and art classes at JCC. They will be making sugar skulls, skeleton puppets and other crafts related to the Day of the Dead. "We are pleased to welcome these young people to campus for a fun and diverse learning activity," said Tom Oakley, art instructor. "For our JCC students, this provides a valuable service learning opportunity that spans the curriculum of both art and education students." For more information, contact Tom Oakley, 517-796-8577. |
