March programs focus on women's history, Irish-Americans

Jackson Community College will present a number of programs throughout the month of March that focus on the topics of women's history and Irish-Americans.  They include:

Fly Girls:  In 1939, on the day after Germany's tanks rolled into Warsaw, the demand for male combat pilots and warplanes left the Air Transport Command with a shortage of experienced pilots.  More than a thousand women signed up to fly with the U.S. military.  Wives, mothers, actresses and debutantes who joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS) test-piloted aircraft, ferried planes and logged 60 million miles in the air.  Thirty-eight women died in service.  But the opportunity to play a critical role in the war effort was abruptly canceled by politics and resentment, and it would be 30 years before women would again break the sex barrier in the skies.  This program will be presented at 1 p.m. on March 2-3, JCC Cafeteria.

"In America": An Irish couple brings their two young daughters to America in search of a better life after a tragedy occurs in their family.  The daughter Christy and her sister, Ariel, find New York's Hell's Kitchen a place of magic where anything is possible.  For their parents, it represents a place to begin anew.  Carried by the girls' youthful hope and faith, the family finds the heart to live and love again.  This movie will be presented at 1 p.m. on March 15, JCC Cafeteria.

Charles Stewart Parnell: He started out as an Irish Protestant landowner but became the leader of the Irish people.  The "uncrowned king of Ireland" was one of the key political figures of Irish history.  He tried to free Ireland from English rule and gained the support of the Fenians, a nationalist group of individuals.  He discredited the British House of Commons and worked with the Irish Nationalist League to bring into reality the idea of Home Rule for Ireland.  This program will be presented at 1 p.m. on March 16- 17, JCC Cafeteria.

The Book Club @ JCC: Captains and the Kings: On a ship bound for America from Ireland, the mother of young Joseph Armagh dies, leaving Joseph in charge of his two younger siblings.   When he arrives in America setting power and money as his goals, his life and the lives of his family takes a drastic turn that changes their lives forever.  Years later and now one of the most powerful and wealthiest men in the nation, Joseph has ambitions for his son to be the first Irish catholic president of the United States. This book will be reviewed at 2 p.m. on March 18, JCC Cafeteria.

One Woman, One Vote:Documents the 70-year struggle for women's suffrage that culminated in the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.  This documentary illuminates the alliances, infighting, betrayals and defeats that paved the way for victory in the battle for women's right to vote.  Historical footage is enhanced with vocal performances, and interviews with historians provide the viewer with both current and historical perspectives.  This program will be presented at 1 p.m. on March 23-24, JCC Cafeteria.

Genealogy @ JCC: Finding your Female Ancestors: In genealogy research, finding our female ancestors always presents special problems. Of course, the primary problem is that women usually change their names when they marry, but part of the difficulty also arises from a woman's legal and social status at various times in history.  Learn how to find your female ancestors in our free genealogy workshop.  Instructor for this program will be Karen Heard from the JCC Atkinson Library.  Call (517) 796-8622 to make your reservation for this workshop, to be presented at 2 p.m. on March 25, JCC Cafeteria.

Susan B. Anthony:Susan B. Anthony fought for women's rights, especially the right to vote.  Combining archival photographs with dramatic recreations and interviews, this film shows how Anthony endured threats and ridicule for her efforts to reform unfair laws that governed women.  This program will be presented at 1 p.m. on March 30-31in the JCC Cafeteria.
