Donny Osmond to perform at Potter Center

7 p.m. Sunday, May 1, Sheffer Music Hall

Audiences recognize him by his first name - Donny.  After 40 years in the music business, Donny Osmond's career is going strong, and he's just released his 54th album, "What I Meant to Say."  Donny Osmond will bring his tour to Jackson Community College's Potter Center on Sunday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in the Sheffer Music Hall.

Osmond's latest album, "What I Meant to Say," was released by Decca in January and has drawn praise from critics and fans alike.  Billboard observes, "an inspired effort from a performer who has been working his magic for an astonishing 40 years now.  And he has never sounded better."  The New York Post adds, "The guy has a flexible tenor with a big theatrical quality."  "What I Meant to Say" features a first as well:  original songs written, produced and performed by Donny Osmond.  The album showcases Donny as a singer/songwriter, adding to his success from teen idol to seasoned performer, Emmy-nominated TV host to author of his New York Times best-selling autobiography, and pop-star performer since the age of 6 when he made his television debut on "The Andy Williams Show" (1963).  Decades of experience prepared him for the challenge of creating an original album, which required him to break free from the trappings and rhetoric of stardom, and to reach into his heart.  What he discovered, at last, was 'what he meant to say.'

"As far as I'm concerned, as the writer and the producer," he says, "I don't worry that it's going to be 'accepted.'  The point is, I have accepted it as my best work thus far.  Even though it's my 54th album, it's the one that I'm most proud of."

The title "What I Meant to Say" tells everything.  These are personal songs, and a glance at the titles - "Keep Her in Mind," "In It for Love," "My Perfect Rhyme," "Whenever You're In Trouble," "This Guy's in Love" - reveals the depth of intimacy and affection they express.  "My Perfect Rhyme" is a long-overdue song for Donny's wife, Debbie, that he promised her 26 years ago.  "Whenever You're in Trouble," was inspired by Donny's 19-year-old son, Brandon, who was suffering from a bad spell of homesickness after serving the first six months of his two-year church mission overseas.

The depth of feeling makes it clear that the process of creating "What I Meant to Say" was never easy and not necessarily fun.  Donny says he had to dig deep in writing these songs.   Though he collaborated with several writers, the strongest creative influence was probably his own experience, being a performer since childhood.  Decades of experience and acclaim have prepared Donny Osmond for the challenge of creating an album of original music.

Fans can hear Osmond's latest release, as well as his all-time favorites, at his concert May 1.  Tickets for the performance go on sale Monday, March 21, and will cost $48, $45 and $38, and may be purchased online at www.jccmi.edu, or by calling the Potter Center Box Office at (517) 796-8600.  The Box Office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Tickets may also be purchased at Tickets Plus in local Meijer Stores.

(NOTE:  Donny Osmond is replacing Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, who cancelled due to illness.  Show time and ticket prices are the same, so those who had purchased Steve & Eydie may use them for the Donny Osmond show.
