Student Nurses Hope Young Teens

Will Dream, Believe and Achieve

Student nurses from Jackson Community College want sixth- and seventh-grade girls in Jackson County to Dream, Believe and Achieve.  Student nurses will present a free community forum by that title on positive self-image and empowerment for the middle-school aged girls on Thursday, March 24 from 9-11 a.m. in JCC's Potter Center.  Nearly 600 teen girls from county schools are expected.

"We want to instill in the young women of our community that we care about their future," said Tammy Myers, a registered nursing student and project coordinator for Dream, Believe and Achieve.  "Our focus is to teach them that they can dream any dream, believe in it, and with hard work, achieve anything they want to achieve.  We also want to inform them of the many dangers they will face and educate them on the benefit of making good choices and staying on track."

Speakers will include: Dr. Cathy Glick, speaking on smoking and heart disease; Marina Martinez-Kratz, nursing professor at JCC, speaking on nutrition and exercise and their effects on mind and body; Colleen Chadderton, JCC nursing professor, will discuss dealing with puberty; and Letishia Baltimore, registered nurse, will speak about how to "Never Give Up."

The forum is the brainchild of Myers, a senior who has organized the event with five classmates for her nursing leadership class: Neysa Carpenter, Diane Wolff, Jillian Camp, and Deb Lockhart.  Myers said she remembers what she went through as a teen growing up, and now as a mom to a 15-year-old, she sees the struggles girls face today.

"As new nurses, we really want to show that we care about our community, and that these children are our future," Myers said.  "We wanted to make a difference with the leadership project that we did."

The event is sponsored by Jackson Community College, and several local businesses and organizations have contributed donations for prizes and giveaways.
