JCC to commemorate Juneteenth with music festival

2-10 p.m. June 18, Riverwalk Amphitheater, downtown Jackson

Jackson Community College will celebrate a Juneteenth Music Festival in downtown Jackson on Saturday, June 18, from 2-10 p.m. in the Riverwalk Amphitheater next to the new Consumers Energy headquarters.  Proceeds from the day's event will benefit the College Incentive Program (CIP).

Highlighting this year's event will be Howard Hewett, R&B artist who sang with the group Shalamar and has released a solo album.  Hewett will take the main stage at 7 p.m. Saturday.  Also performing will be:

·        Immunity Reggae Band, 4 p.m.

·        Too Smooth for Notes, smooth jazz, 6 p.m.

·        Positive Energy funk, R&B and blues; local gospel music artists; and Mark Mathias Youth Strings, throughout the day.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the JCC College Incentive Program students.  CIP inducts sixth-grade students from various Jackson County schools with the promise of two years of free JCC college tuition after they graduate from high school, and is headed by Director of Multicultural Relations Cam Herth. Students are selected by the principals of their schools, based upon the student's ability to benefit from the program.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the freedom for African Americans.  From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.  Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.  It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, cookouts and family gatherings.
