30th Annual Winter Film Series features classics, newer works

Jackson Community College is pleased to present the 30th Annual JCC Winter Film Series, beginning Jan. 9 at the Michigan Theatre.

The film series is presented in conjunction with the JCC class, English 210: Introduction to Film, taught by David DeBaker, which examines film as an art form. The public is invited to view the films, which begin at 7:15 p.m. on scheduled Mondays; admission is $6.

Films to be presented this year include:

  • Jan. 9 -- The Freshman (1925), starring Harold Lloyd as a nerdy college freshman who will go to any length to become popular.
  • Jan. 16 -- no film.
  • Jan. 23 -- Edward Scissorhands (1990) Rated PG-13, directed by Tim Burton. Johnny Depp stars as Edward in Burton's fairy tale of an outsider accepted and then rejected by those around him.
  • Jan. 30 -- Being There (1979) Rated PG, directed by Hal Ashby. Peter Sellers gives an amazing performance as Chance, a man who only knows about the world through television.
  • **Feb. 6 -- Hilary and Jackie (1998) Rated R, directed by Anand Tucker. The true story of Jacqueline Du Pré, a brilliant concert cellist, and her sister, Hilary.
  • Feb. 13 -- M*A*S*H (1970) Rated R, directed. by Robert Altman. The darkly comic movie that inspired the TV show. Robert Altman uses comedy to deal with the cruel realities of war.
  • Feb. 20 -- The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) Rated R, directed by Steve Kloves. The Baker Boys, Jeff Bridges and Beau Bridges, adds sexy singer Michelle Pfeiffer, causing both success and difficulties to their long-running lounge act.
  • Feb. 27 -- Stardust Memories (1980) Rated PG, directed by Woody Allen. Woody Allen's comedic exploration of a director who has everything he wants, but still can't find happiness.
  • **March 13 -- An American in Paris (1957) Not rated, directed by Vincent Minnelli. Gene Kelly stars as Jerry Mulligan, a struggling American painter in Paris.
  • March 20 -- Barton Fink (1991) Rated R, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Barton Fink (John Turturro) is an intellectual New York playwright who comes to Hollywood to begin writing movies. He stays at the strange Hotel Earl and meets traveling salesmen John Goodman.
  • March 27 -- Walk the Line (2005) Rated PG-13, directed by James Mangold. Joaquin Phoenix gives an amazing portrayal of singer Johnny Cash, with Reese Witherspoon as his muse and love, June Carter.
  • April 4 -- Broken Flowers (2005) Rated R, directed by Jim Jarmusch. After receiving an anonymous letter informing him of a son he didn't know he had, Bill Murray embarks on a journey to discover who the mother is, and something about himself.
  • April 10 -- The Fog of War (2003) Rated R, directed by Errol Morris. A documentary about former Kennedy and Johnson Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and his experiences during the Cold War.
  • **April 17 -- La Traviata (1982) Rated G, directed by Franco Zeffirelli. A filmed version of the Guiseppe Verdi's opera, the tragic story of a love affair between the stunning Violetta Valery (Teresa Stratas) and Alfredo Germont (Placido Domingo).
  • April 24 -- Crash (2004) Rated R, directed by Paul Haggis. An ensemble cast explores racial tensions over one night in Los Angeles.
  • May 1 -- Brokeback Mountain (2004) Rated R, directed by Ang Lee. This award-winning film follows the lives of two cowboys, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, who form a lifelong bond after a summer in the mountains.
