This prestigious annual award is the highest MCC bestows on faculty and staff in the state of Michigan. Ms. Petry, professor of English, has been designated by peers as the faculty/staff person on campus who has made the most outstanding contributions in community service-learning. This award recognizes the influence on or engagement of students to be involved in community service or service-learning through modeling, instruction, and/or special projects. Ms. Martha Petry was nominated by Ms. Marian Burlingham, director of the Center for Student Success and Service Learning at Jackson Community College. Ms. Petry began integrating service-learning into her children's literature class at the request of students. In 1998, she became JCC's first director of service learning and has mentored many faculty as they, too, incorporated service learning into their courses. She has been a model for her own students, a resource for other instructors, and continues to be an inspiration as she serves on the JCC Service Learning and Civic Engagement Steering Committee. Ms. Petry was formally honored during an evening awards ceremony February 16 at the Northbank Center on the campus of the University of Michigan-Flint, part of the Tenth Annual Institute on Service-Learning "The Places We Live: Student Engagement in Diverse Communities." Michigan Campus Compact is a state-level non-profit organization that promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
